Devon has always been hugely popular with families and if you've decided to go self-catering this year, you can expect a choice of great quality accommodation in the form of mobile homes, lodges and plush chalets at the region's numerous holiday parks, as well as great restaurants and fabulous evening entertainment. Whatever the location of your holiday park, you'll also find a world of family-friendly attractions on your doorstep which will leave you with lasting memories for years to come.
Many people come to North Devon for the surfing at the region's immense sandy beaches or to enjoy walking, cycling and horse-riding along coastal trails or across the remote moorland of Exmoor. The coastal towns of Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Bideford are well worth a visit as part of your holiday as well as the sleepy inland villages and market towns. For a real taste of rural life in Devon, head to Quince Honey Farm at South Molton to marvel at huge colonies of bees and learn about the important contribution they make to our lives. If you're visiting Bideford, the Milky Way Adventure Park has everything you could possibly think of to entertain all members of the family. But to see silliness reach new heights, make sure you call in at the Big Sheep attraction. A hilarious day out for the whole family, everything here revolves around our woolly friends, so prepare to witness sheep shearing, feed friendly lambs and even bet on a real live sheep race!
You'll find plenty to do as a family in South Devon, with its chocolate box cottages, pretty coves and gentle rolling countryside. The towns of Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Totnes and Salcombe all offer great family days out in themselves but if you want to have some fun, take a coastal cruise from Dartmouth to Totnes, or jump on the South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh, and chug your way through the countryside in the old-fashioned way. Pennywell Farm and wildlife centre, also at Buckfastleigh, is an enchanting family day out which gives you the chance to meet some adorable animals and join in some fun activities, from go-karts to quad-bikes. If you're feeling creative, head to Totnes and visit China Blue, a centre of creativity where you can try your hand at painting your very own chosen piece of Devonshire pottery.
The vibrant English Riviera towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, and neighbouring Torbay, Teignmouth and Dawlish make a great base for any Devon holiday. England's answer to the Cote d'Azur, with its warm climate, swaying palms and glittering harbours, there's everything to keep the family entertained in the area, from adventure golf in Teignmouth to glassblowing demonstrations in the beautiful village of Cockington. If you love exploring underground show caves, Kents Cavern in Torquay is a fascinating world of geological wonder, with additional fun activities laid on for the children. At Paignton, you can visit the zoo or enjoy a journey on the steam railway and enjoy fabulous views of the countryside. For an extra special day out, leave the train at Kingswear and take the ferry to Dartmouth followed by a relaxing river cruise to Totnes.
